Sogang University’s Department of Art & Technology recently visited the conference room of Hanjoo Holdings Korea in Myeong-dong, Seoul, to present a tribute film titled Behind the Scene and an appreciation plaque to Shin Young-kyun, Honorary Chairman of the Shin Young-kyun Arts and Culture Foundation and one of the department’s major benefactors.
The event was attended by Honorary Chairman Shin Young-kyun, Shin Eon-sik, Chairman of Hanjoo Holdings Korea and JIBS Jeju Broadcasting, and Kim Doo-ho, Executive Director of the Shin Young-kyun Arts and Culture Foundation. Representing Sogang University were Professor Kim Sang-yong, a faculty member of the Department of Art & Technology and the university’s Director of Planning, along with Professors Choi Yong-soon and Jung Da-saem. Han Yoon-ji, a scholarship recipient and former student council president, also attended as the student representative and personally expressed gratitude on behalf of the students. The gathering was designed as a meaningful occasion for faculty and students to visit their benefactor in person and convey their respect and appreciation.
In 2012, Honorary Chairman Shin made a major contribution to the development of Sogang University’s Department of Art & Technology by donating KRW 1 billion to support its educational and research foundation. Through this contribution, the Shin Young-kyun Studio was established in 2013 and continues to serve as a creative educational and research space where students begin new experiments, ideas, and interdisciplinary projects.
The Shin Young-kyun Scholarship has also played a significant role in supporting students since the department’s founding in 2012. Through the department’s overseas exploration program, a total of 252 students are expected to have received support by December 2025, enabling them to encounter broader global experiences. In addition, 69 students have been supported in continuing their creative activities, while 16 students have expanded their academic and artistic experiences by presenting their research and works at conferences and exhibitions in Korea and abroad.
With this support, students in Sogang University’s Art & Technology program have continued to explore new possibilities across development, planning, design, and research, moving freely across the boundaries between art and technology. They have also worked to grow into creative talents capable of generating positive change in society.
The tribute film, Behind the Scene, draws inspiration from Red Muffler, one of Honorary Chairman Shin Young-kyun’s representative films, and captures both the department’s growth and the students’ research and overseas exploration activities. The video was released through the official YouTube channel of Sogang University’s Department of Art & Technology and was led from planning to production by students Park Min-jun, Morisawa Hiyori, Kang Jeong-mo, and Kim Chan-hyuk. The students took charge of the entire process, including planning, filming, and editing, sincerely conveying the department’s gratitude and respect.
During the event, an organic tea cup set prepared by the university, along with the tribute film and appreciation plaque produced by the department, was presented to Honorary Chairman Shin. Han Yoon-ji, attending as the student representative, also delivered a handwritten letter expressing deep appreciation.
In response, Honorary Chairman Shin said, “Seeing all of you doing your best in every part of your lives brings great comfort to my heart,” offering words of encouragement to those present. He also shared a warm moment by personally signing copies of his memoir, I Lived Without Regret, and presenting them to attendees.
Through this event, Sogang University’s Department of Art & Technology once again reflected on the spirit of generosity that made the department’s challenges and growth possible. The department said it will continue striving to cultivate creative and ambitious talents who contribute to society through the convergence of art and technology.
